Days 7-8: Manzanita on the Oregon Coast

As our first week came to a close, we were anxious to get on the road for a long drive up to Whistler to meet up with some friends. We just couldn't resist hitting another beach along the way (my mom has most accurately nicknamed us "Beach People"). While we spent only about 24 hours on the Oregon Coast, it certainly gave us plenty to share.

Manzanita was recommended by our friend Alex as a great spot to camp, hang at the beach and surf.  Luckily finding camp was easy and we hit the jackpot with toilet and showers only 50 yards from our back (van)door! The Nehalem State Park Campground is very family friendly and a bit cozy (you will definitely get to know your neighbors) but it is right on the beach and has great bike paths that take you straight into downtown Manzanita. Upon arrival, we took in a quick sunset from the Dunes, prepared a quick dinner on the grill and hit the hay.

After a great night's sleep, waves crashing in the background, we ventured out to the beach for a much needed exercise session. I run fairly often at the beach, usually while Johnno surfs, but this was was extra special as it was accompanied by a beautiful and eerie fog and people on horseback. I swear we saw the Old Spice man on a stallion at one point!

The highlight of our time on the coast was the afternoon we spent in Smuggler Cove on a hidden beach called Short Sand just north of Manzanita. It's only accessible by making your way through the trees via an easy mile long hike. We parked in a small lot off the Oregon Coast Highway in between Necarney Creek and Short Sand Creek and made our way down.

This is definitely a local hangout and we were met with smiles and sunshine. Johnno hit the waves and my head hit the sand for an awesome beach snooze - the best place for a catnap in my opinion! I highly recommend hitting this spot if you're in the area, but respect that it's a bit of a secret hangout for the locals and keep it mellow.

We wrapped up the night with some great Oregon craft brews and pizza from Marzano's which you can order right from the window; I highly recommend the Spicy Italian pie. On to America's Hat we go! See you in Whistler.
