Day 1: Au revoir San Francisco!

The Dos Hobos adventure begins! After months of saving and planning, weeks of sidewalk sales and Craig’s List ads, several roles of packing tape, some sweat and tears, we finally left our beloved San Francisco for a year of adventure and exploration. It was bittersweet but we are happy to finally be on the road and excited about what the next twelve months hold.

To kick off our cross country road trip, we headed a few hours north and set up at Kyen Campground on Lake Ukiah. The sun was rapidly setting and hobo dinners were on the menu so we fired up our new Coleman grill, popped a couple of cold beers and basked in the glee of our first night post 9-5 existence. It was an easy first day, though we are still working out some kinks. Being on the road and sharing a small space can be challenging. With the right attitude and resources, there really is nothing better.

Things I learned on Day/Night One of van life:

  • Procure great maps! Service can be spotty when you’re in the trees and they’re more interesting to “read” than mobile map apps. Plus, it’s fun to take notes directly on the map for cools spots you find along the way.
  • On the road, patience and compromise are directly correlated to how much fun you can have. Set goals for the day to give you and your road trip crew a common focus and hopefully a sense of achievement at the end of the day.
  • Always know where your headlamp, jacket and toothbrush are located. After an incident with some tree stumps on a chilly midnight pee break - sans glasses and headlamp - I will never forget the importance of these items.

We are so happy to have a space to share our adventures. We'll be blogging in our downtime and you can follow our Instagram account @doshobos for daily updates. Stay tuned as we continue our journey east and let us know what you'd like to see on the blog. As for itinerary, we will post details as they are cemented; our high level plan is US Road Trip, bike touring through western Europe, pre-holiday hopping around eastern Europe, holidays back in the US and Asia in the Spring.

We hope to share our travels with you soon! Thanks for stopping by,

- Megan, HOBO 1
